The Aquinas College student organization AQ STARS for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan, which supports wish-granting for children with life-threatening medical conditions, is pleased to announce their premiere event, "A Cabaret for Wishes," an evening of entertainment featuring more than 20 of Grand Rapids' finest entertainers, set to take place at 8 p.m. on Monday, February 27, 2006 at the Wege Ballroom on the campus of Aquinas College.

AQ STARS is a new student organization at Aquinas College as of this academic year. Since becoming an official organization in the summer of 2005, the group has been anxiously planning this event. In addition, several of the event's performers have spent months preparing for their performance.

"My parents work at DeVos Children’s Hospital, so I have been fortunate to meet [some of] the children which Make-A-Wish benefit... I am so happy to have this opportunity to perform and support Make-A-Wish," says Julia Freyer, a senior at City High who will be performing "Suddenly Seymour" with her friend Johnny Stellard, a senior at East Grand Rapids High School. Both Freyer and Stellard are hoping to study musical theatre at the University of Michigan, from which they are awaiting acceptance letters.

The evening's roster of performances consists of husband and wife Matt Tepper and Lynne Brown-Tepper. No strangers to the stage, Matt and Lynne starred in the Rocky Horror Show at Actors' Theatre, for which they both received a 2005 Grand Award nomination for supporting roles in a musical. The Teppers will be performing a duet from the smash-hit musical Wicked. Other performers include Billy Konsoer, soon to appear in I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change at The BOB, who will present a selection from Big River along with Bobby Haggard of The Scott Bell Trio. Aquinas College adjunct instructor and theatre director Beth Guest will pair up with Larry Young for the humorous song "A Stud and A Babe." In addition, selections will be performed throughout the evening by Michelle Covington, Cici Gramer, Justine Klein, Rob Karel, Noddea Moore, Ashli Roberts, and many more. Well-known local cabaret group the.theatre.project, featuring Alex Agard, Aubry Talbott, Andy Schneider, and Brendan VanStee, will close the show with a selection from Songs for a New World.

As guests enjoy the intimate ambiance that will feature decorations provided by several Grand Rapids' florists, they will snack on desserts from the Atlanta Bread Company while listening to the music provided, along with a special guest performance by a former Make-A-Wish recipient. There will also be an art gallery featuring original works by Wish kids, with each piece available for purchase. Steelcase, Inc., Meijer, and Israels Designs for Living all serve as sponsors for the event, and the AQ STARS group hopes to generate enough funds from the cabaret to underwrite the wish of one West Michigan child.

Tickets can be purchased in advance from the Campus Life Office at the Cook Carriage House on the campus of Aquinas College or from the West Michigan Make-A-Wish Office located at 2900 East Beltline NE, Suite E. In addition, tickets will be available for purchase at the door for $15 general admission, and $7 for students with an I.D.
