Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Per federal regulations, institutions must monitor the academic progress of financial aid recipients. Aquinas reviews students' financial aid eligibility each semester (excluding summer) to determine whether they are capable of remaining in good academic standing and are making adequate progress toward a degree.

If a student becomes ineligible for financial aid, they get one semester of WARNING. If they don’t regain full eligibility after that semester, they may appeal if they have extenuating circumstances.

SAP Statuses Description
Satisfactory

No action needed. The student is meeting GPA, Completion Rate, and is still within the Maximum Timeframe metrics.

Warning - GPA

Students are not meeting SAP GPA standards but remain eligible for one additional semester. They must pass all coursework and meet the minimum GPA Requirement. SAP will be reviewed again at the end of the semester, and an appeal will be required if standards are still not met. These students may benefit from proactive academic support.

Warning - Completion Rate/Pace

Students are not meeting SAP pace requirements (67% completion rate) but are meeting GPA standards. Encouraging course completion and not withdrawals will be important.

Warning - GPA and Completion Rate

Students are not meeting either SAP standard and should be strongly encouraged to remain enrolled in all courses and utilize support services. The goal will be to meet GPA requirements for the semester and cumulative, as well as complete 100% of all registered courses.

Warning - Max

Students are at risk of losing financial aid due to being in the program too long and taking credits that exceed 150%. Students should refrain from taking extra courses or withdrawing in order to finish their degree in a timely manner.

Suspended

Student received warning semester and failed to regain eligibility. No longer are eligible to receive Federal Aid. May appeal with supporting documentation, if there are extenuating circumstances. See Appeals Section above under Financial Aid Policies.

Terminated

Students are no longer eligible for financial aid, having previously appealed and not met SAP standards under an approved academic plan. Consider taking courses at a local community college for 2 semesters, with a 2.5 GPA or higher and no W’s or F’s.

Academic Plan 1

The student’s SAP appeal has been approved, and they are placed on a one-semester Academic Plan to regain satisfactory SAP status. During this semester, the student must meet all plan requirements, including a 100% completion rate (no W or F grades) and a specified minimum semester GPA. If the student does not regain satisfactory SAP standing by the end of this one semester, they will lose financial aid eligibility with no option to appeal.

Academic Plan 2

The student’s SAP appeal has been approved, and they are placed on a two-semester Academic Plan to regain satisfactory SAP status. The student must meet the Academic Plan requirements over the two semesters, including a 100% completion rate and a specified minimum semester GPA. If the student does not regain satisfactory SAP standing by the end of the two semesters, they will lose financial aid eligibility with no option to appeal.
