Behind every successful athletic program, there are individuals who work tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring student-athletes thrive in both their academic and athletic pursuits. At Aquinas College, one such individual is Sara Haviland, Director of Student Success. Haviland is renowned and vital to the fabric of the AQ community.

Haviland is more than an advisor—she is a mentor, an advocate, and a guiding force for students navigating the challenges of college life. Her dedication to academic success, career readiness, and personal growth makes her an irreplaceable asset to Aquinas athletics and the broader student body. Recognized as the Saint Support Superstar for March 25-31, Haviland's influence extends far beyond the walls of her office.

A Role Built on Dedication and Passion

Haviland's role is a dynamic one, filled with constant engagement with student-athletes, faculty, and support staff. From overseeing study tables to conducting graduation audits, her work ensures that students stay on track academically while also balancing the rigorous demands of their sports.

"I have learned many things about student-athletes by constructing the study table project over the last five years," Haviland shares. "It has involved lots of collaboration and, of course, love for the students—two things I really enjoy! This semester, I am proud to say we have forty-six hours of study tables each week, composed of many services including tutoring, ESL support, writing center assistance, international programming, accessibility services, campus ministry, and professor office hours. Athletes clock in between 800 to 900 hours a week."

That level of commitment requires adaptability and a deep understanding of student needs. One day, Haviland might be reviewing four-year academic plans; the next, she's walking around campus with snacks, engaging in casual yet meaningful conversations with students about March Madness brackets or future career aspirations. "Those casual conversations with students—I really enjoy them. They allow me to understand the students more, and that leads to deeper discussions about class schedules, tutoring assistance, and career planning."

A Front Row Seat to Success

Haviland's work isn't just about helping students succeed in the moment—it's about preparing them for life after college. "I really get a front-row seat to the beginning, when they may be uncertain about a career path, and then to the finish line, when they are doing final interviews at a company they really want to work for."

Her commitment to student success extends beyond their time at Aquinas, as evidenced by the continued relationships she maintains with alumni. "Last week, two alumni stopped in: Demestrius Miller (track and soccer), who now works for Vanderbilt University doing similar work to mine, and Kyle William (track), who provides academic support for the Michigan State football team. I am filled with pride when I think about all the conversations I have had with students like Demetrius and Kyle and how my Saints are going out into the world and making a difference."

This passion is deeply personal for Haviland. As a former member of the AQ women's soccer team, she knows firsthand the challenges student-athletes face. "I needed support in big and small ways, and it really made all the difference. Every email these days is always left with, 'How can I help?' It is never a bother—it is a continued commitment to the promise I make them when they are recruited. I am here, and I want to help."

A Community That Recognizes Her Value

Haviland's impact has not gone unnoticed by the coaches and administrators who work alongside her.

"Sara is committed to the well-being of the Aquinas student-athlete and is truly passionate about their success," said John Konya, AQ Head Golf Coach.

Brad Koch, the Aquinas head coach for softball, echoed this sentiment: "Sara is an amazing person who is dedicated to our students being successful like no other. The work she does has been invaluable for our student-athletes."

Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Dr. Ronald D. Reeves, speaks highly of Haviland's role within the college. "Sara remains the heart and soul of Aquinas. Her role is underestimated, and she is someone who should be at a higher level within the college. Athletics has been a major success because of her work, heart, and dedication."

Ryan Bertoia, head coach for AQ men's basketball and an Aquinas alum, added, "Sara Haviland is an essential pillar of student support, not just for student-athletes but for all students. She goes above and beyond, interacting with more students across campus than anyone else. Our students' and athletes' academic success wouldn't be at such a high level without her dedication and impact. She is truly an amazing person, and I sincerely hope she remains with us for many years to come."

Liz Lerczak Lee, Associate Director of Athletics, sums up the general feeling about Haviland: "The level of care and commitment Sara has to see students succeed is unmatched. We should all be so lucky to have someone care about us as much as she does. She is truly the best."

Aquinas head men's rugby coach Lance Hohaia also emphasized her importance: "Sara brings tremendous value to our students, consistently going above and beyond in her role. Her commitment to their well-being, academic success, and personal growth is evident in everything she does. I have the utmost respect for her dedication, professionalism, and the positive impact she makes on our students and our program as a whole."

A Lasting Legacy

Sara Haviland may not be the one scoring goals or winning championships, but her impact on Aquinas College athletics is undeniable. She ensures that student-athletes are prepared for life beyond the playing field, instilling in them the confidence and skills they need to succeed in their careers and beyond.

Her unwavering commitment, tireless work ethic, and heartfelt dedication make her a true Saint Support Superstar—one whose influence will be felt by Aquinas student-athletes for years to come.
