Grand Rapids, Mich. – 2010 ArtPrize winner Chris LaPorte, a 1996 graduate of Aquinas College, was the center of attention
last night at the College’s Hall of Fame Gala and Homecoming Weekend Kickoff festivities.
LaPorte, who was recently hired on full time as a Visiting Assistant Professor of
Art, was presented with the distinguished President’s Award.
College officials also announced during the event that "Cavalry, American Officers,
1921," LaPorte’s 2010 ArtPrize-winning entry, will be moved to Aquinas College following
this year’s ArtPrize event. Final arrangements are still being made with the ArtPrize
organization for the long-term loan, but plans are for "Cavalry" to hang in the Grace
Hauenstein Library.
The Hall of Fame event, which honored nine other alumni and friends of the College,
was held on Thursday, September 22 at the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center.
“I am absolutely humbled about being honored with the President’s Award,” said LaPorte.
“To be hired on full time, to receive this honor and then to announce that Cavalry
will reside on campus is truly a homecoming experience that I will never forget!”
“Chris is very deserving of all the accolades,” said Aquinas College President Juan
Olivarez. “His accomplishments as professor and artist, along with his humble spirit,
make him a wonderful representative of what Aquinas College is about.”
