On Thursday and Friday, October 17-18, 2024, Dr. Roger Durham and five Aquinas students presented at the Michigan Political Science Association (MIPSA) conference, which was held at Saginaw Valley State University this year.

According to Kevin G. Lorentz, president of the Michigan Political Science Association, MIPSA’s mission is to provide “an outlet for research dissemination and discussion among practitioners, students and experts alike.”

At this past conference, our AQ Saints heard from Michigan’s Attorney General and several well-established political science professors. Among them, Dr. Durham acted as a panel chair.

The following students presented their original research:

  • Grace Wilson presented "The International Refugee Regime: An Analysis of Ukrainian Refugee Treatment in Poland, Germany, and Russia," a co-authored paper she and Dr. Durham produced from their 2024 Summer Research grant.
  • Ethan Tennant presented his paper, "Guatemala in the Periphery: The 1954 Coup d’Etat and the Guatemalan Civil War."
  • Jenna Daschke (2024 recent grad) presented her Senior Honors Thesis, "Unpacking American Exceptionalism: Exploring Its Influence on College Students’ Global Literacy."
  • Aiden Butler presented "The Setting Sun: An Analysis and Solution Regarding Japan’s Future.” He also interned with the US State Department in the summer of 2024.
  • Emily Bissett presented "Insular Areas of the United States: The Case of Guam and Dependencia."

Their research covered various important global and political topics, showing how dedicated and curious our students are. We are incredibly proud of their accomplishments and wish them continued success in their academic and professional journeys.
