What is Service Learning?

"A form of experiential education in which students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities intentionally designed to promote student learning and development" -B. Jacoby

Service Learning engages students in civic responsibility, critical thinking, and structured reflection by actively involving them in organized community service. This, in turn, prepares students for a lifetime of personal growth and social responsibility.

AQ Service Learning trips allow students to put their faith into action and practice the Dominican charisms of prayer, study, community and service.

Several students participating in the college’s upcoming service learning trips this fall break will be providing assistance to areas that have been affected by recent hurricanes.

Approximately 64 total students will participate in Aquinas’ annual service-learning trips October 20-28. Those areas include St. Peter Claver Church and School in New Orleans, Louisiana, and El Llano in the Dominican Republic through the Building Bridges of Hope partnership.

My experience opened my eyes to issues of social justice that I had not thought about before. I also learned a lot about myself from being out of my comfort zone.
