Dr. Briana Asmus received her PhD in English education with a minor in postcolonial
studies from Western Michigan University. Prior to her career in higher education,
Briana was an ELA teacher at the secondary level. She also taught English as a foreign
language (TEFL) in South Korea, Japan, and China where she also designed and directed
bilingual summer programs. For several years, Briana worked as a literacy consultant
in migrant education, where she completed her dissertation research studying the critical
practices of teachers who were former migrants themselves. Briana's research interests
lie at the intersection of ELA, ESL, social justice, and critical literacy. She has
authored several publications, most recently as the Co-Editor of Engaging the Critical in English Education: Approaches from the Commission
on Social Justice in Teacher Education published under Peter Lang Education. Briana serves as a member of the Michigan Department
of Education ESL Advisory Council and Michigan Institutions of Higher Education (IHE)
EL Collective. She is also a member of NCTE, MITESOL, and AERA. Briana's hobbies include
teaching fitness classes (Pilates and dance), building and riding mopeds, and reading
Queer YA Literature.
