Student of the Month 2017-2018

March
The March Student of the Month is Olivia Smith. Olivia is a junior who is pursuing a triple major in Economics, International Studies and Spanish Interpretation and Translation. She has been on the Dean’s list four consecutive semesters. Her most recent accomplishments include: awarded an outstanding delegate for her representation of Algeria on the Palestinian Foreign Affairs Committee at the Michigan Model Arab League sponsored by the National Council on US-Arab Relations Conference, leading the preparation of the 4 th annual Aquinas High School Model United Nations Conference, member of the student senate, president of Enactus Club, Spanish Specialist writing consultant in the AQ Writing Center, active participant with the Social Action Committee and an active member of POLIS, the non-partisan political studies club.

Morgan Abate

February
The February student of the month, Morgan Abate, is currently in Ireland taking part in our study away program, where she has an internship with Conservation Letterfrack. She organized numerous academic projects and service opportunities as president of the History Club. Morgan has served as a peer consultant in the Aquinas Writing Center as well as organize Aquinas volunteers to help with the Mayor’s River Cleanup. She has been on the Dean’s List four semesters. In short, Morgan is a dependable volunteer organizer and fine student scholar, who faithfully reflects the College’s Dominican values.

Sarah Toppen has been selected as the November Student of the Month. Sarah is a junior majoring in Political Science. She has been on the Dean’s list for all of the four semesters she has been at Aquinas. Over the 2017 summer, she had an internship in Washington, D.C. at the United Nations Foundation Nothing but Nets Campaign where she learned about diplomacy, public relations, infectious diseases, gender issues and advocacy. Sarah has shown extraordinary leadership as Head Delegate of Egypt at the 2017 American Model United Nations. Other accomplishments include: Recognized as “Outstanding Representation” of “Party to the Dispute” in the 1956 Historical Security Council with her partner Kyle Hibbard. Recipient of the 2017 AQ Dag Hammarskjold Award for Outstanding Performance – our highest and most coveted award. She is an excellent political science student and a student assistant in the political science department at Aquinas.

After studying in Ireland last semester, Mary Wernet's impact on campus has once again been grand.  Mary, who is known as a deep thinker and is very active around campus.  In addition to being a student ambassador, Mary has also joined the Student Senate as a senior Senator.  Mary is also an active leader as a resident advisor.  Her academic record is suburb as she has spent each of her six semesters at Aquinas on the Dean's List.  Mary is interested in social justice issues and is majoring in Community Leadership.

Sophomore Yesenia Bernal has been selected as the Student of the Month for September. Yesenia is a hard worker who demonstrates excellent leadership as the president of the Spanish Club and Vice President of LASA (Latin and Student Association). She has been on the Dean’s list and serves as a mentor for the first year students through the EXCEL Mentor Program. Yesenia provides selfless service to the community by volunteering both at Kids Food Basket and Samaritas.
