Ticket and Seating Information

Commencement will take place on Saturday, May 9, 2020 at 2 p.m. in the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center. Doors will open at 1 p.m. for entry into the Center for guests of graduates. Please check the Graduate Itinerary for details about entry for graduates.

Each graduate will be allowed up to 4 tickets for guest seating in the Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center. ALL guests must have a ticket to enter unless they are a child under the age of 1 and can sit on an adult’s lap.

Tickets may be picked up at GradFest on Monday, April 27 from Noon - 2 p.m. or from 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. If you are unable to attend GradFest you may pick up your tickets in the Dean of Students Office (AB 107) beginning Tuesday, April 28 through Friday, May 1 from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. A Will-Call will be available at the Sturrus Center beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 9 for those students who are out of town during the GradFest week. Please call the Dean of Students to arrange for the saving of your tickets.

If you have more than 4 guests interested in attending the Commencement Ceremony, an alternate viewing area will be open. Please see the separate section on Alternate Viewing Site and information.

Information on Seating in Sturrus

  • Please be advised that seating in the Sturrus Center is bleacher-style. No floor seating is available unless accessibility accommodation is needed and has been requested (please see separate section on (accommodation seating).
  • Seating is not reserved and will be available on a first-come, first served basis.
  • Guests will not be permitted to save seats for others.
  • Guests are asked not to bring in large bags or backpacks that take up excess space. Infant seats or strollers WILL NOT be permitted in bleachers.
  • As seating is limited, ushers will be asking guests to move in as much as possible to allow for other guests to be able to access seating.
  • When the Academic Procession begins, guests will be asked to take their seats and will not be allowed in the hallway or rear of the Center during the procession. Late arriving guests will be asked to wait until the procession is completed before entering the Center.
  • A professional photographer will be present to capture your graduate’s special moment so we ask guests to refrain from leaving their seats for photography purposes during the ceremony. Please see the separate section on professional photography for information on how to order photographs.
  • As the ceremony ends, guests are asked to remain in their seats until the academic recessional is completed. Once the recessional is completed, guests will be allowed to exit.
  • Prior to Commencement, we suggest you identify a location outside of the building to meet your graduate.

Accessibility Seating in Sturrus Sports and Fitness Center

For those guests needing accessible seating for the Commencement Ceremony, seats will be available in a reserved section of floor seating for each individual requesting accessibility and one accompanying companion. An application for seating must be submitted for each individual requesting accessible seating either by completing the online application included with the Commencement information or by submitting the application at GradFest.

A separate ticket will be issued for each individual and accompanying companion needing accessible seating and can be obtained at GradFest. These tickets are considered part of the allotment of 4 tickets per graduate. These are not additional tickets and you will be required to exchange a regular ticket for the accessibility ticket.

If your guest requires the use of a mobility cart, please know there will be a designated location for placement of the carts during the ceremony. Details will be provided when retrieving your accessibility seating tickets.

Anyone needing accessible seating along with their companion must have an Accessibility Seating ticket to enter the reserved seating area. While every effort will be made to accommodate all those needing accessibility, priority will be given to those who have the Accessibility Seating tickets.

Anyone not claiming their seat by 1:40 p.m. may have it forfeited.

Guests holding an accessibility seating ticket, along with their companion, will be allowed to enter Sturrus at 12:30 p.m. to give everyone time to get to their seat ahead of the general seating guests.

Alternate Viewing Location for the Commencement Ceremony

The Commencement Ceremony will be available via live-stream for those unable to attend the Ceremony, however, if you have more than the allotted four guests who would like to be on campus for Commencement, an alternate viewing location will be available, Wege Ballroom/Loutit Room. No tickets are required for this venue. Seating at this location will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Loutit Room is available for any guests needing accessibility seating for the alternate viewing location.

Alternate Viewing Locations:

  • Wege Ballroom (snacks/beverages/activities for the children will be available)
  • Loutit Room - Accessibility Seating
