Getting Started

MUSIC MAJORS: As you search the Music Department web page links, you will notice that we believe that a music major degree is a multi-faceted path which draws upon many learning approaches, and which prepares students for careers in music, as well as in other directions that benefit from the skills acquired through an Aquinas College degree.

Most current music majors at Aquinas College are receiving scholarships from the department’s endowments.  Submitting an Audition Application is the first step toward being welcomed into the Music major and being considered for a scholarship in music.

NON-MAJOR STUDENTS: At Aquinas College, we also encourage all of our students to continue to participate in each of the activities that has brought them enjoyment over the years. In the Music Department, we know that many students have participated in:

  • Choir
  • Band
  • Orchestra
  • Theatre
  • Privately studied piano, voice, guitar, or another instrument(s)
  • Formed a ‘garage band’
  • Songwriting
  • Church ensemble

Aquinas College and the Music Department have a variety of opportunities for continued pursuit of these activities. While the majority of these scholarships are designated for Music majors, there are scholarships available for Ensemble membership. Schedule your audition early!

The Audition

  1. You should select music literature according to your specific instrument:
    • Pianists and Organists should prepare contrasting pieces from two stylistic periods.
    • Instrumentalists should prepare two contrasting selections that demonstrate technical facility and lyrical phrasing.
    • Vocalists should prepare two Art Songs of contrasting style, one being in a foreign language, if possible.
    • All - Select music that will demonstrate the breadth of your ability and with which you are comfortable. Your performance time will be eight minutes in length.
  2. Your audition will take place in our beautiful 210 seat Kretschmer Recital Hall.  Following your audition, you will have time to meet and speak with the Aquinas College Music Department Faculty.  So, if you have questions, please bring them.
  3. As you plan for the day, allow time following your audition with the faculty for music theory and piano assessments.
  4. Be sure that your Aquinas College Application is in.
  5. Send, FAX, or deliver copies of the music for our Staff Accompanist to the Music Department at the address below no fewer than ten days in advance.
