Easy-going, good natured Berenger lives in a small provincial French town, where everything's pretty normal--except that a person apparently turned into a rhinoceros. The town is besieged by this one roaring citizen who proceeds to trample on the social order. As more citizens are transformed into rhinoceroses, the trampling becomes overwhelming, and more and more citizens become rhinoceroses. Berenger, unable to change his form and identity, becomes the lone hold out against insanity--or does he? The sublime is confused with the ridiculous in this savage commentary on the human condition.
