Investing in the sciences

Science at Aquinas College is more than just lectures and assignments.

Science at Aquinas College is one lens through which Aquinas students can pursue the truth. We do this first of all by teaching our students to approach the created world with a sense of awe and wonder - whether studying biology, health science or ecology, chemistry or physics, nursing, geography or environmental studies, or simply taking science as a general education requirement. We believe that science is essential, not only for professional training, but also as a liberal art. The study of science helps students learn how to think critically, how to make cohesive arguments, how to assess the quality of evidence, and how to appreciate the complexity of life - all very important attributes needed for young people to truly make a difference in the world.

At Aquinas, science students can major in Biology, Health Science, Chemistry, Geography, Environmental Studies and Nursing. They can also be part of a new and innovative partnership in Engineering with Western Michigan University. Projections are that by 2020, demand for talent in the health and technology fields will increase by 16.5% and health support practitioners by 23.9%. In order to meet this demand and better serve the region, Aquinas College needs to expand and update its science facilities. Since the current Albertus Magnus Hall of Science is over 50 years old, a main focus of the capital campaign is the addition of a new science wing and the complete renovation of the existing wing. Campaign funds will also help us attract and retain top faculty and staff, grow undergraduate research and internships with local employers, and create an Institute for Center for Sustainability and Economicology.

The new science building will double the overall square footage dedicated to research labs, classrooms, and common study spaces. Like all of our new construction, the new science building and refurbished Albertus Magnus Science Hall will be innovative, inspiring, and sustainable and will allow us to expand our science programming. Contributing to our commitment to environmental stewardship, the new science building will be a LEED certified building.
